Crunchyroll announced details about the streaming debut of Gachiakuta, the shonen manga by Kei Urana from Kodansha. While it will start its run worldwide on July 6, 2025, there will be a “Here Comes Gachiakuta" tour introducing it via different events a few days early at places and cons globally. There is also an official graffiti site and interview video with Urana and graffiti designer Hideyoshi Andou.

In the series, Rudo is a young man being raised by his foster father Regto. But when he lands, he realizes he has the power to become a Cleaner, using Giver abilities to fight the Trash Beasts that inhabit The Pit. If you have an extraordinarily popular anime and manga series like My Hero Academia, it is only inevitable you will get spin-off series that flesh out the world more. I have been waiting for years for My Hero Academia: Vigilantes to get its due as an anime series. While it is finally here, it doesn’t quite feel like a required watch for fans just yet.

The story of My Hero Academia: Vigilantes kicks off with the main character, Koichi, going about his business as a normal young adult. Koichi is your typical All Might fan that works at a knock-off Family Mart and gets beat up by thugs in alleys occasionally. The only notable part about Koichi is his moonlighting as the do-gooder Nice Guy.

Image via Bones

Unfortunately for Koichi, his quirk isn’t too helpful for fighting bad guys. Koichi’s quirk just has him slide along the ground at the speed of a bicycle. His life changes, though, when him and an underground pop idol are saved one day by a vigilante that acts like the messy Batman version of All Might.

Together, three vigilantes decide to work together to investigate a new drug that is empowering villains in the town. This is the general gist of what happens in the first episode, which isn’t much. You get an introduction to the main characters and the battle they are going to fight in the series.

That said, I can’t help but feel like this is a “wait and see” type of anime right now. As of right now, there isn’t much to enjoy in the series. The main characters are fine, but nothing special. Koichi, in particular, is a mostly forgettable protagonist. He doesn’t quite have the standout (for better or worse) quirkless nature of someone like Deku, nor is he super heroic, either.

The same goes for the other two vigilantes he fights alongside. At the same time, the story is pretty lackluster at this point. It is barebones enough to get the point across, but isn’t exciting enough thus far. There is no notable drama or anything to get me to root for the main characters. It doesn’t help, either, that there aren’t any exciting or notable villains introduced just yet.

My Hero Academia: Vigilantes review

For me, the most notably disappointing part of the series yet is the animation. While not inherently bad by any means, it doesn’t look great, either. This could be because this is not from the primary animation team at Bones. That said, it doesn’t look any better at all than the very first season of the original MHA looked back in 2016.

I am aware this series gets much more serious and intriguing as the manga goes on. As such, I do expect this anime series to get better in due time. That said, it will likely take several episodes to get to that point. After all, it is just a bit too goofy and almost parody-like at this time to recommend to all fans of the original series.

My Hero Academia: Vigilantes feels like it is in the wait and binge watch category right now. I’m not sure I will watch it week-to-week myself. This is because the characters, story, and general animation are all able but nothing special right now. In the end, My Hero Academia: Vigilantes isn’t quite the required spin-off I would recommend to fans just yet, but that could change in the future.

My Hero Academia: Vigilantes is streaming right now on Crunchyroll.

my hero academia vigilantes trailer and key visual

Toho Animation has released a new teaser trailer for anime series My Hero Academia: Vigilantes. It’ll start airing in Japan on April 7, 2025.

Here is the trailer for My Hero Academia: Vigilantes:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iF7Hp24b9ak

The trailer starts with an introduction of our new protagonist, Koichi Haimawari. He is an ordinary university student whose Quirk lets him glide along the ground, though not very fast. After a chance meeting with a vigilante, he becomes an unofficial and uned hero as well. Some characters from the main series make cameo appearances in this trailer, as we see All Might and Eraser Head.

A new key visual for the show is also on the website. It depicts Koichi with the other main characters, Kazuho and Knuckleduster, leaping down from the skies while a full moon rises behind them.

My Hero Academia: Vigilantes is a spin-off and prequel to My Hero Academia. It ran from 2016 to 2022, and had 15 volumes in total.Horikoshi did not work on the story or the art. Instead, Hideyuki Furuhashi (K: Missing Kings, K: Side Blue) wrote it and Betten Court (Spider-Man: Octo-Girl) illustrated it. News of its anime adaptation first came out in late December 2024, at Jump Festa 2025.

My Hero Academia: Vigilantes will start airing from April 7, 2025. As Crunchyroll has the entire main My Hero Academia series available on its platform, it will likely have this as well.

my hero academia final season

Yet another ryokutya2089 leak seems to confirmed the continuation of another Shonen Jump series. The final season of the My Hero Academia anime, which will allegedly literally be called My Hero Academia: Final Season, will start airing during the Fall 2025 anime season. There’s no information as of yet as to how many cours it will consist of. The current run is on Crunchyroll. [Thanks, ryokutya2089!]

The Fall anime season usually starts around late September or early October, so that’s when we’ll be able to expect the last season to air. News about the final season first appeared in October 2024, though at the time, Bones didn’t mention anything about the exact season or month. When season 7 ended in June 2024, it stopped during the Final War Arc. That means that the final season will finish that up before entering the Epilogue Arc, which is the last part of the Final Act Saga.

My Hero Academia is a popular anime and manga series that started serialization in July 2014 and ended in August 2024. The anime series started in April 2016. It follows the story of Izuku Midoriya, a boy without a Quirk (superpower), despite his iration of superheroes, especially All Might. After meeting All Might, he inherits the powerful “One For All” Quirk, and with it he enters U.A. High School. At school, he, along with his superpowered classmates, train to become heroes. However, various conspiracies and villainous plots mean they spend more time fighting crime than getting an education.

My Hero Academia is on streaming services like Crunchyroll. Viz Media handles the manga outside of Japan.

The Japanese Red Cross is collaborating Shuiesha’s My Hero Academia for a blood drive. This campaign will run from January 17, 2025 to March 31, 2025 in Japan. [Thanks, PR Times!]

Between the above dates, if you go donate blood at Red Cross, you can receive an original clear file depicting the main students and heroes of My Hero Academia. There are only 35,000 clear files, which means they’re on a first come first serve basis. You’ll also need to reserve an appointment via La Blood, which is an online service for Red Cross blood donations. You can also receive a poster if you follow this Twitter and retweet the campaign post. 100 people can win the poster, and this campaign will last from January 17 to February 16, 2025.

The copy phrase for this campaign is “You can become a hero too.” Aside from this future collaboration with My Hero Academia, the Japanese Red Cross has used other popular IPs to promote blood drives. An Uzaki-chan campaign stirred controversy back in 2019. In the 2020s, Red Cross teamed up with Fruits Basket and Sanrio as well. These drives usually encourage people to donate blood with the incentive of exclusive goods, much like the My Hero Academia one.

The Red Cross campaign will run from January 17 to March 31, 2025. You can watch My Hero Academia on streaming services like Crunchyroll. Viz has licensed the manga for an English audience.

My Hero Academia Anime Reportedly Ends in 2025

The final season of the My Hero Academia anime will reportedly bring an end to the series in 2025. The manga ended on August 4, 2024, back when chapter 430 of the series debuted. Season 7 of the anime series is currently ongoing. [Thanks, ryokutya2089!]

With the manga having come to an end, it’s easy to imagine that the anime series will soon follow suit. Season 7 of the My Hero Academia anime will end on October 12, 2024, after 21 episodes, and it covers the Star and Stripe Arc, U.A. Traitor Arc, and part of the Final War Arc of the manga. In the report of these news, leaker ryokutya2089 speculated that the possible final Season 8 of the My Hero Academia anime could consist of two cours of episodes.

Aside from its anime adaptation, the manga series will soon receive the My Hero Academia: You’re Next anime movie in theaters in North America, with its release date set for October 11, 2024. Additionally, a crossover event with Overwatch 2 will allow players to get skins based on the anime characters between October 17-30, 2024.

fullmetal alchemist

Over 20 years ago, an seemingly unassuming manga titled Fullmetal Alchemist started serialization in Enix’s (at the time) Monthly Shonen Gangan. Since then, it’s become a classic in the anime and manga sphere, between its well-written characters and plot, cohesive themes, and cool battle sequences. To this day, companies are still releasing merchandise of it! And for good reason too. Fullmetal Alchemist remains, in my opinion, one of the best anime and manga series, and if you’ve been looking for an excuse to reread or rewatch it, well, here it is.

fullmetal alchemist brotherhood elric brothers

Fullmetal Alchemist, for the uninitiated, takes place in the fictional -inspired Amestris. In Amestris, people can learn how to use alchemy to transmute a material into another through the Law of Equivalent Exchange. If you’re a particularly good alchemist, then you can even work for the government and receive the title of State Alchemist. There are a few hard rules of alchemy though, and one of the biggest taboos is transmuting people.

Protagonists Edward and Alphonse Elric are brothers who are very talented in the art of alchemy, and Edward in particular even achieved the title of State Alchemist. However, they have a secret: Edward lost his arm and leg, and Alphonse lost his entire body because when they were children, they attempted to use alchemy to bring their mother back to life. Now, their goal is to retrieve what they’ve lost—not their mother, but their bodies. In order to accomplish that, they need the Philosopher's Stone.

As a note, I personally haven’t rewatched the 2003 anime since it came out, so I can’t really how the anime-original characters were in that. So everything I talk about here is in regards to the manga and Brotherhood. The story of Fullmetal Alchemist on the surface level is really interesting. The premise allows for Edward to journey pretty much everywhere he wants to, and author Hiromu Arakawa excels at writing well-rounded characters. I particularly like the way that she writes women and children. With the latter, it’s so easy to write children as either ridiculously obnoxious or unrealistically innocent. As for women, well, I’m sure most people have seen discussions about how some authors under-utilize their female characters, leading to no real development or strong personality. Arakawa doesn't really have that issue.

fullmetal alchemist izumi
You can practically hear the "FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST!" Image via Bones.

By strong here, I don’t mean the MCU type where a woman's fighting strength is the be-all and end-all. Winry, for example, takes on a role in the series thanks to her job as Edward’s mechanic. While I don’t have any real attachment to the pair’s romance (and thus I have no real thoughts on Winry as a love interest), Winry on her own is an interesting character between her personality, dynamic with the Elric brothers, and her history with Scar. The real “Wow, I love this queen” characters are, of course, Izumi, Hawkeye, and Olivier. They’re not just smart or strong, but they also have their own vulnerable and emotional sides that make them feel like actual living people rather than a “girl power” icon.

It’s really too bad that Lust’s backstory with Scar’s brother was entirely a creation of the original 2003 anime. The conflict between her Homunculus persona and her human memories made her so much more compelling. While all the other Homunculi had rather poignant or ironic deaths and revelations in regards to their namesake, Lust felt underutilized in comparison. This isn't a knock on her death scene or who killed her, but more that I wish she had a bit more going on. However, I understand that too much attention on Lust, who's a side character at most, would've been detrimental on the overall pacing.

Aside from the characters and story, I loved how Arakawa depicted the themes and messages that she wanted to convey through the story. Even though the military characters like Armstrong, Mustang, and Hawkeye are likable, neither they nor the story ever shy away from the fact that these people are, indeed, war criminals. Yet how they choose to carry that burden and how it shapes their ambitions to better the world, especially in contrast to characters like Kimbly, make them sympathetic and compelling.

Considering the current fandom climate when it comes to depictions of “problematic” material, I’m pretty sure that if Fullmetal Alchemist aired today, certain fans would be cancelling the military characters left and right without any critical though as to why Arakawa wrote them this way. Ironically, in an old interview about how she created the series, Arakawa discussed this sort of thinking, in a way. After mentioning that her ancestors displaced the Ainu despite some of her relatives having Ainu blood, as well as the cognitive dissonance in Scar killing State Alchemists while using alchemy, she stated, "I think the truly serious problems in this world are when people don't make any effort to learn about these everyday situations, when they turn away from them or view them from only a single perspective." That message still resonates today.

There’s a lot going on in Fullmetal Alchemist and I won’t say that the story is a short one. The storytelling is tight, while still leaving enough room for levity so the characters (and readers) can breathe. But the true triumph of Fullmetal Alchemist is in the ending. Arakawa told the story she wanted to tell and it was pretty clear from the way the story concluded. Sure, you can say it’s a babies-ever-after ending. But that the Elrics’ goal, from the very beginning, had been to return to normalcy. And you can’t get more normal (albeit in a rather heteronormative way) than settling down with someone after a thrill of an adventure. The kids deserve some R&R!

Fullmetal Alchemist remains one of my favorite shonen anime and manga series for its strong writing, and I love how you can feel how much care Arakawa put into every aspect of its characters and worldbuilding. Now more than ever, I feel like it's a story that people should experience or re-experience, and it's not just because October 3 was Fullmetal-Alchemist-and-Mean-Girls Day. If you haven’t seen it yet, I highly implore you to do so, whether it’s Brotherhood or the first anime adaptation. Just don’t forget the tissues!

You can watch Fullmetal Alchemist on Crunchyroll (only Brotherhood though). The manga is available in English via either Yen Press or Viz Media.

my hero academia you're next trailer

Bones has released a new trailer for My Hero Academia The Movie: You’re Next. The title of the trailer is “Who’s Next.” [Thanks, Comic Natalie!]

You can watch the trailer for My Hero Academia: You're Next here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPUmCFgZPPA

It’s almost two minutes long and as of the time of writing, it’s accumulated just over 54,000 views four hours after its debut. In the trailer, we can see the evil All Might (Dark Might), who’s like an obsessed All Might stalker. The new villains that Bones previously showed off also appear in this trailer. It also shows off the three main characters—Izuku, Bakugou, and Todoroki—using their powers in battle. Meanwhile their classmates and other pro heroes like Hawks help evacuate the civilians as the city crumbles around them from a villain attack.

From the looks of the trailer, it seems like there will be some kind of ship tease-like moments between Izuku and movie-original character Anna Scervino. However, it’s unlikely to go anywhere considering Anna is an original character. Meru Nukumi, a model and actress, will voice her. This will be her second voice-acting role in an anime film. Her previous role was herself in Healin’ Good Precure: GoGo! Big Transformation! The Town of Dreams, which aired in Japan in 2021.

My Hero Academia The Movie: You’re Next will air in Japan from August 2, 2024.

My Hero Academia Season 7

It’s that time once again to revisit U.A. High School and see what Class 1-A is up to in the grand fight against Tomura Shigaraki and All for One. My Hero Academia season 7 finally arrived, and while it doesn’t appear to be the final season of the long-running anime series, it certainly doesn’t need to be.

The premiere episode of My Hero Academia Season 7, Episode 139 “In the Nick of Time! A Big-Time Maverick From the West,” wastes no time in getting back into the thick of everything. Following Deku’s return to U.A., it appears the final war with Tomura Shigaraki and All for One is gearing up. The episode gave a little bit of screen time to Deku and some of his classmates, but considering everything happening it wasn't much at all. This actually worked in the episode’s favor, as it meant it didn’t take too much time recapping everything like past season premieres.

Instead, it dove into the newly introduced number one hero from the US, Star and Stripe. As the apprentice to All Might, she has both the unbelievable power and ridiculous costume taste of the lovable hero. Her journey to Japan brings her face-to-face with the series’ main villain Tomura Shigaraki alongside her own fighter jets. Much of the episode features the initial part of the two supes duking it out with one another in terrific fashion.

This battle between Star and Stripe and Shigaraki/All for One makes for an excellent way to start Season 7. It focuses less on the character development and story, and more on action. I actually don’t mind this, as we are so far into the series at this point, it feels great to see high-stakes battles like this one. Much like some of the best fights in the series, this one is almost like a turn-based puzzle, in a way. We see Star and Stripe use her fascinating superpowers against Shigaraki. It looks like she is going to win. He counters it, she counters back, and it continues. All the while, we get to learn more about Star and Stripe’s exceptionally overpowered quirk.

Though much of the episode and action takes place in the sky, this doesn’t detract from the animation. If anything, this blank canvas allowed for some striking visual effects and facial animations. Shigaraki, as always, is as terrifying as ever. Meanwhile, Star and Stripe has all the blonde hopefulness of All Might 2.0.

While the episode ends on a cliffhanger, it becomes clear this fight is only getting started. As such, this premiere did its job right. It teased the final war and themes of this season well. And at the same time, it offered its own set of meaningful action that stands out well among the already great fights in the series.

I also can’t fail to mention the new opening theme from TK. If you love some of his classic anime openings in the past, you’ll probably enjoy this one, too. Overall, the My Hero Academia Season 7 first episode does just about everything right. It sets the stakes high again for the final war between the heroes and villains. In addition, the premiere wastes no time in diving headfirst into the beginning of the end. As such, I can’t wait to continue watching the latest season of this long-running anime.

My Hero Academia Season 7 is now streaming as part of the Spring 2024 anime season on Crunchyroll. Viz Media handles the manga outside Japan.
